If you want to explore Loch Lomond and have a few hours to spare, then taking a little road trip aong the bonny bonny banks is absolutely the way to do it. Grab some snacks, screens for the kids while driving, a good playlist and off you go.
Outdoors
Bennachie is a great place to explore with kids. There are options on how far you want to walk, still taking in a mountain peak, so you can either head to Mither Tap and back down, or head further along the trails to the other peaks in the range. The views from the top are stunning. It really is one of the best wee hills in Scotland.
Nestled in the Nevis Gorge, the huge cascade of An Steall is Scotland’s second highest waterfall, and the second highest in the UK. This is one of the best wee walks we’ve done with the kids. The walk itself never gets boring and the ending, well that’s just spectacular.
The King’s Caves trail on the beautiful island of Arran is a great walk for families, taking you on a circular walk down to a rocky beach where you can explore a series of natural, oceanfront caves. One of the caves is said to have been where Robert the Bruce…
The Whangie is one of the most kid friendly walks we’ve done in Scotland. The dramatic rock formation is stunning to see and is like a natural playground for kids who like to explore. It’s easy enough for young kids to walk by themselves. A great few hours out!
The East Neuk of Fife is a wonderful place for families to explore. You could spend the entire time at all the different beaches, but here are some things to do if you have a weekend in the East Neuk.
Ardkinglas Estate is a hidden gem on the paths of Loch Fyne. Families will love exploring the woodland, finding fairy houses, following the map to find the Gruffalo at the end of the trail and playing down by the river.
Jupiter Artland is a great day out for families. Play on the sculpted hills, visit the donkeys, wander round the beautiful woodlands. Brilliant fun for everyone.
Dumfries House is a hidden gem in South Ayrshire. The grounds are beautiful, the water play area is brilliant. A great day out and best of all it’s free.
Loudon Hill is a great family friendly hill walk in East Ayrshire. It’s a quick walk even with kids and the views from the top are beautiful.
